Who We Are
Washington Women in Transition (WWIT) is a non-profit agency providing employment training, life
skills education, mentoring, motivation and support for girls and young women age 6-21 that are
at-risk, economically disadvantaged, and without the skills to make positive life changes and
realize their true potential. Our office and classroom space, located in West Seattle, is the only
such organization in the Southwest/White Center community.

History of WWIT
Washington Women in Transition began in 1999 as the dream of Catherine Riley, who felt called to
respond to the growing number of young women she witnessed slipping between the cracks, falling
prey to addiction, crime, poverty, hopelessness and desperation. In 2001, WWIT was awarded
non-profit status by the IRS. Since then, we have provided education and life skills to over 350
girls and young women in the Seattle area.

Who We Serve
The lives of the young women we serve are in constant turmoil, beset by homelessness,
abuse, marginalization, and/or disability. As a result, they are often lacking in the skills they
need to enable them to change their lives for the better. The young women in WWIT are particularly
vulnerable, and are at extreme risk for failure, unless they are taught the academic and life
skills they need to emerge from poverty.

How We Are Different
It is precisely this population that is most often underserved by existing organizations, who
often provide temporary solutions rather than solutions that allow a young woman to transition
into a strong, self-reliant, confident adult.
